(9 Responses) What information do you think should be accessible from the homepage?
  • mission, news, and careers, which are all already present
  • -Wondering if the three "Who we are" icons should be clickable? The good neighbor could redirect to our charitable giving page, good employer could link to careers, and good steward of the earth could link to our environment/sustainability page. Or could the text change color or something when you hovered over it? -Will the latest news be an endless scroll or is it limited to 8 tiles? -Change "This Week at the SMSC" to "Upcoming Events" or something more general -Under "Construction Updates" change "Road work happening around SMSC" to "Current and upcoming projects around the SMSC" -The fonts seem a little wonky in the event descriptions (as discussed, we'll also need to remove all the CM exclusive events) -Is there an opportunity to make the photos clickable rather than just the hyperlinked text? -Under careers, change "employees" to "team members" -Add the English translation somehow to the Dakota welcome. Maybe if you hover over it? -In the upper right, I would add just a touch more space between "Careers" "Contact" and "Members Only" -It would be nice if the cloud movement was a little more three dimensional rather than just side to side--if it moved up or toward you as well, that would be cool.
  • I think the info is adequate.
  • I think the information available on the homepage is good. However, the events are a little jumbled and difficult to follow. Given that there aren't that many SMSC public-facing events, I would either eliminate or pair this down significantly.
  • The overall design of this page is top-notch. I really think the movement of the clouds and the loading of the text add a nice attention grabber for new users to the site. I think we could do away with the subtitles under the "This Week at SMSC" and "Construction Updates" sections. Also, I know these are currently hooked up to the CM website posts so we will want to make sure to change these to only reference public events and updates before we go live. On a visual side, I think the main navigation could use some love as well. The search bar below those additional links looks out-of-place and I think we would be better off with just a search icon that opens a search overlay. Additionally, I think we should have the background of the navigation go to a solid color when the page is scrolled down.
  • *The only thing I think is missing is that the main page doesn't really talk about the Community too much. *Do we care that there's no explanation of what Anpetu Waste means? *I feel like the "This week at SMSC" and "Construction Updates" is off centered compared to the rest of the blocks. Maybe it's just because the events are blank...also it should be "This Week at the SMSC" in my opinion. *Top Initiatives block feels like there is a ton of dead space. *Hocokata Ti looks weird in the Culture & History drop down list. *Personal opinion...I hate the word "happenings" in "Latest News". Make it "updates" *What will replace "Lorem Ipsum" in the Latest News blocks? Seems unnecessary unless those will be categories of news.
  • I believe the top initiatives space is supposed to be a scroll with a couple different things, unless that is just not being displayed at this time.
  • Can't think of anything that is missing from home page.
  • - The events under 'This week at SMSC' feel like they should be clickable. We probably would want to have some more information pop up when an event is clicked - Same for the construction updates on the right hand side - Will 'Top Initiatives' have more initiatives listed? How will the list look if there's multiple initiatives?

  • It is a lot, but likely useful for SEO!
  • Possibly more under the "Who We Are" section.
  • 20ish
  • I think we could reduce the list of links by a lot. What warrants being there is probably a good discussion topic to have at some point.
  • Trim out the sub links
  • Much less, it is very overwhelming as is
  • Could be reduced by replacing the enterprise links with a banner that has all the logos, similar to the current site

  • I like the accordion effect for mobile
  • It's clean, just too many links.
  • The colors and layout work well together.
  • Like that it's a little offset from the rest of page
  • looks good, just too many
  • I love seeing all of the links to the various content on this site and beyond. But I'm still confused if we need to create more content for each of the Department pages.

  • the external page icon at the end of each link under the enterprises column makes the list not visually pleasing
  • Easy to read.
  • Each section has enough spacing to give a good visual break so the user isn't confronted with what feels like a wall of just links. However, the amount of links makes this quite a lot to digest at once.
  • I can see it, is someone testing this for like colorblind people?
  • too many to read

  • - We ran an accessibility check on the website using this resource: https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/. It looks like the white text over the prairie/fog fails to pass accessibility standard. Could the font color be dark, or a solid background be added under the text? - The light blue text on the homepage and elsewhere also fails the website accessibility standards test we used. Could the color be darkened? - Under the “latest news” section, the article preview text takes up a lot of space. Could it be shortened to just a sentence or two? Or removed completely, so it’s just the article title? - For “Top Initiatives,” could this be a slider to show multiple projects?
  • -I would eliminate the external link icon after the enterprises, it makes it more cluttered than it needs to be. -Gaming Commission is spelled wrong in the footer. -I would put "The Meadows at Mystic Lake" after "Little Six" and not factor in the "The" for alphabetization. -Move "Shakopee Dakota Convenience Store" above "SMSC Water Bottling" -Add the dots above the c and the T in Hocokata Ti. -Remove the space in NativeGreen. -Remove the space in "SMSCgives" -Change "Childcare Grants" to "Child Care Grants" -Capitalize "Homeless Prevention Grant"
  • The SMSC shield logo at the top left us is squashed on my mobile safari browser. Needs to get fixed.
  • The English translation of the Dakota word "Anpetu Waste" should be included. Headline titles under "Latest News" need to be included. Right now it's just Lorem Ipsum. I wanted to click on each section of "Who We Are" to learn more, but I don't have that option. A photo for Dakota Language Tables and Nature Walk could be included instead of using the shield lockup. I also think we need to discuss what events are shown weekly. A lot of what is listed isn't open to the public or even employees. For example the Craft Circle, Maka Open Studio, and Dakota Language Family Night is community member only.
  • I don't think enterprises and department links need to be in the footer. I think if someone was visiting the website specifically look for the (example) SMSC Land Department, they wouldn't go to the footer first to find it, so it's not entirely necessary. I would search the top links first.
  • Just an opinion, but I think we can remove the "Follow Us" copy above the social icons. I think most users understand that these icons link to the social accounts where they can follow.
  • -hocokata ti is spelled wrong under Culture and History -Trim down the list to Departments, Enterprises, Culture & History, Environment, Philanthropy, Resources, Services & Programs (assuming the sub links can be accessed through those).
  • I think we can have less links. It's essentially the same information in the header and footer, and that doesn't seem necessary. Instead of listing each enterprise/department, consider using just "Departments" and "Enterprises" and link to those respective pages. Same thing with the other areas, I don't think we need a full site map listed.
  • Love the design and simplicity, and that most anything you are looking for you can find either from the dropdowns or the footer. Wondering if, once live, the 'Latest News' section will be in order by date from most recent to oldest.
  • For the events section, I'd suggest changing the header from "This week at SMSC" to "Upcoming at the SMSC" or "Upcoming Events at the SMSC" or something similar. While there is a lot happening around here, I don't think we have enough public facing events to have something each week. How are we going to handle the footer link to LaunchPad? Will we have a site stood up by the time SD.org goes live, or a presence on the corporate site?
  • Hero section animation gives a great first impression Header: - Logo is not vertically centered in the header - Header feels slightly too tall on desktop - Hover feedback needed for nav menu subitems

  • - The smoke effect is fairly high on people’s faces. Can it be moved down? - The Business Council has asked to revise the philanthropy message in press releases. Recommend changing the second paragraph to: “The SMSC is one of the top philanthropists in Minnesota and is dedicated to helping build strong, healthy communities.” - The green quotation marks looked like numbers to me when I first saw them. - Under “Community Member Outreach,” we use both “SMSC Members” and “Community Members.” Recommend just using one across the full site.
  • the "The Shakopee Mdewakanton community has become a regional philanthropic force." green quotes look like a giant "66" and "99"
  • -I'd like to see more of the background image at the top of the page, rather than have it all blurry. -Change "According to the Star Tribune" to "The Minnesota Star Tribune" -Change "SMSCgives Purpose" to "Our Mission" -Check photo resolution, seems a little pixelated to me. -It would be neat if there was some movement on the photos when you scroll down. -I know it's a placeholder video, but I'm not sure that I love using the Polar Plunge video on the website since it wasn't an SMSC-run event. -Change "Community Members" to "SMSC members" -In the "Careers" blurb, change "employees" to "team members"
  • Not a huge fan of Hocokata Ti being blurred as the hero image. It actually messes with my eyes a little bit. Add another parentheses after "force" for the pull quote from the Star Tribune.
  • Looks great! I don't love the one green quote around the Star Trib line. The quote should be closed and also the green just stands out too much. I don't think we need a job callout here. It doesn't fit well.
  • I'm not a fan of the centered copy for the intro paragraph. In my opinion, the centered copy leaves too much white space on either side and doesn't flow into the square, gridded layout of the rest of the copy. Also, I think we could come up with an alternative way to style the quote from the Star Tribune. Something to make it "pop" off the page more. Not a big deal, but I think we could also find an alternate photo for the background of the SMSCgives Purpose section so it isn't the same as the video. I would also like to see some margin between the SMSCgives purpose and the Outreach Programs section. gives a visual break for the reader jumping into a new section. Overall, the page design is great and outside of the things I have pointed out, I really like how the content is structured and the visual elements on this page.
  • *I like the way the lower blocks are laid out, balancing the art with the copy. *I like the testimonial from the Strib. Could we add more and have them cycle through? *Again, I really don't like the copy that brags about donating more to Indian Country than any other tribal government or organization in America. *Functionality: There's really nowhere to go from this page. Not like you can sign up for events or learn more about specific initiatives. So it works for me.
  • Overall, I think it looks great! I would suggest using the Dakota translation under "SMSCgives" rather than having Generosity and Helping. I would also edit the quote to accurately reflect the tribe's name.
  • Love the clean look of the page.
  • Photos are pixilated.
  • Page looks great! 'Community Member Outreach' needs a tiny bit of extra padding on the top and bottom imo

  • the title is hard to read since the background image has dark spots in the image so some of the letters get lost. the always-moving clouds/fog on every page are distracting
  • I would like to see more of the photo
  • I think we can pull a beautiful land photo. A huge initiative environmental sustainability.
  • This goes for all pages but I feel like there could be a better differentiation for our page title and any intro copy. I don't have any specific suggestions for this but the current solution leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion.
  • Don't use money value, use the initiative name and then put money in the next group of copy.
  • Page title feels like it should be vertically centered in the hero image

  • - Recommend some separation between the first body paragraph and “highlights of this work include.” - When the website launches on January 20, the SMSC will have announced IndigeFit Kids (happening January 16). Can we add that as a highlight? It could say, “$6 million through our IndigeFit Kids campaign [link to website] to improve the physical and mental wellness of Native youth in Minnesota.” - Could we make the “spotlight stories” images and headlines bigger across the page?
  • the "The SMSC is known for its philanthropic commitment to support other Native American tribes across the country, contributing millions of dollars in charitable donations and economic assistance." goes almost all the way to each edge of the page on the left and right, which makes it feel a bit awkward.
  • -In this sentence, "The SMSC is known for its philanthropic commitment to support..." Change "support" to "supporting" -The university seal looks pixelated to me. -Rather than "Articles" let's title this "Spotlight Stories" or something like that. -Put "wóokiya" in italics.
  • The text layout under the "11 million" donated to Native nutrition and "5 million" to Native American schools is messed up. The articles at the bottom of the page need headlines (still showing Lorem Ipsum).
  • I don't feel this page needs a career callout. The photo of the UMN graduates is also blurry. Otherwise, this page looks great.
  • I really like the highlights section and the interactivity that is currently in place. I would add some space above the "Highlights of this work include" so it is easier to read. There is a flash of the text when each of the highlights is hovered over when it swaps away from the desktop view. Also, the highlights have variable widths around the 767 px wide device width. Not sure who would see this but we should be able to fix that.
  • *Hero Images show they should be links but don't work. *Is there a reason that the endowed scholarship is a separate block than the hero images? Seems like that would fit right in there.
  • I like it a lot! My only suggestion would be to maybe try playing with the copy where it has the millions listed over the pictures; it might be cool to see all of the copy overlayed over the picture.
  • If you just scroll directly down the page from the top, you might not know that if you hover over the top 4 photos, that there is more information revealed.
  • Love this page, looking forward to seeing the news feed on here as well.
  • Highlight cards are 'jumping' when mouse leaves

  • - Guidelines for applying for grants are included on the page, but not donations. Can that be added or incorporated as well? When first reading the page, it read like only Native organizations, tribes or schools could apply for any funding.
  • cute
  • -I would switch the photo that is used next to grants - the check being presented there is not a grant, so it's a little misleading. -Could we replace the PDF icons with something a little more visually appealing? Or maybe we make these tiles or something that you can click? The links are all broken, but I'm assuming you know that already. -I would recommend moving the Grantvantage Portal button up to the top of the page, so that you don't have to hunt for it.
  • Love it. Great job with organizing the downloadable PDFs.
  • I don't think the hero image should be of Hocokata Ti. I don't have a suggestion at the moment of what to place instead. I'll continue to think on this.
  • Looks great. I do think that is a lot of informational PDF's. Maybe we can consolidate those?
  • The sub-copy on the Non-Monetary Items type looks a bit out of place when none of the other items have a sub-copy. Also, when "Non-Monetary" wraps, it pushes the sub-copy to the very bottom of the section so there is no padding below it. This is fixed when that section swaps to a column.
  • Under resources, do we need the PDF logo for every option? I honestly don't know how I feel about it.
  • I think this one is great. I don't think the careers box on the bottom is necessary though.
  • Looks like links at bottom don't lead anywhere yet. Title of 3rd PDF on top row (Resources). Should it be Submitting an Application (not Submitting and Application)?
  • items in the 'resource' section feel like they need some additional content, or maybe just more condensed formatting

  • No edits/comments, looks great!
  • would be nice if the dakota spoken/audio values were smaller and side by side in a 2 column list. right now they are very large on the screen and take up a lot of real estate :) also, would be nice if when i click on the play button, the blue lines change color as the audio plays, so i know it's playing and i know how much longer it has to go just by visual cue (i don't mean to say it needs to have a number of seconds displayed). just some indication that it's playing. there's a lot of space after the last value - can that potentially be removed?
  • -I like how the text appears as you scroll, makes it easier and more interesting to read. Is this something we could duplicate on other pages too? -The diacritical marks get a little funky in some of the value descriptions.
  • There is a grey line that shows up through some of the words in the heading titles on mobile safari. Needs to get fixed. The values accordion boxes and the values words bleed off the frame. They need to get shrunk so they are all the same size and fit within the mobile screen.
  • I don't think we should have Hocokata Ti be the hero image. Need to think more on what the image should be. There is a small line appearing over the text "part of the Oceti Ṡakowiŋ" and over "Our Dakota" (near the values section). "Our Dakota Values" should have a line break and be listed under "Dakotapi Wόecuŋḣaŋ Wakaŋ kiŋ Caŋte Etaŋhaŋ". I suggest updating the sound graphic to have a play symbol. Please add a space between the play graphic and the English translation (make all three elements spaced the same).
  • Love this page. Very informative and well designed. Again, no need for the careers callout, though.
  • The images for the different values seem like they may get too small in the tablet view before they go to full width. Not sure what the actual images will be but it may be worth expanding those image section widths until we swap to them being full width.
  • I believe we are discussing the art on this page, but I think it needs SOME form of art work. Otherwise it's a lot of copy with nothing to go with it.
  • There's a lot of white space on top, maybe some type of color box behind all of the top copy. Also, instead of using photos next to each value, it would be cool to have a speaker, then when you click it someone would pronounce it. I think that would be a cool way to make it more interactive!
  • I know that this page will look a bit different when the photo boxes are removed.
  • Some of the special Dakota characters in the body copy are not blending in with the rest of the letters. Is this something we can fix?
  • Is the 'ŋ' glyph appearing correctly in this font face? It seems slightly more bolded than the other glyphs. This looks like it affects some other Dakota glyphs as well when the text is bold

  • -There's a couple missing spaces in the timeline text (see 1863, 1989, 2007, 2008, 2019) -Are the fonts the same size throughout? Some of the slides are throwing me off, but that could be because they're centered on the tile, so they're moving up and down. I feel like it might look more polished to have the year consistently locked on the same part of the screen, so that it doesn't move up and down. -Under "1861-1865" there is a line on the right side of the page. Same thing with the years 1993,1994, 2002, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018. -When I scroll from "Reservation era" to "Allotment and Assimilation" it skips to the second tile in that section. -Would it be possible to just continue clicking the right button to scroll through all the phases, without having to scroll down? -In 2008, add a period after "site."
  • I think the whole timeline can be pushed down to fill the center of the page (like what you did for the main landing page- Our History). Right now when I scroll the navigation menu/bar is cutting off the top of the photo as well as "Year". Each period is laid out slightly different. The heading (Removal, Reservation Era, Allotment & Assimilation, etc) doesn't align with the photo or the copy. We need to finalize a proper layout for this section. Please work with Allison directly on this.
  • I don't really have any suggestions for this, but I know it is a bit complicated. It appears that if you scroll down you jump to new eras, but if you go to the side you get specific events. It seems way more complicated and I can see it creating functionality problems down the road.
  • The page title being blue does not match the visual consistency of the rest of the pages. Between 770 and 1156 px, the arrows for horizontal navigation disappear which could cause confusion for users who don't quite grasp the navigation right away. I would also suggest having the content be vertically centered on the page to reduce the bottom white space. Not sure how the script can be configured but I also don't think the title and the final section should be part of the timeline navigation. Overall, I am not a huge fan of the layout of the timeline. To me, the whole process of scrolling through seems "extra" and forced.
  • *Copy needs to be proofed. Lots of sentences start without a space following the period, etc. *Don't understand the end of the timeline when it suddenly jumps to Dakota Values.
  • Overall I think it looks fine. I don't love the "Year" listed above each year, but that is super minor.
  • Love the QR code addition. Looking forward to seeing it with photos, when they are ready.
  • We'll need to clean up the copy just a little (some spaces between words seem to be missing). Some of the scrolling seems a millisecond slow. Do we need the Dakota values entry at the bottom of this page?

  • - Could the second photo of Hocokata Ti be swapped for a photo of the bark lodge? The copy next to it talks about the lodge.
  • Would like to see more of the hero image, as with the other pages.
  • I would like to see a different hero image used. We have a beautiful image of the building at night that I think would be great to use here.
  • Career page not necessary.
  • Is there a reason the Hoċokata Ṫi Cultural Center is bold when other titles are not? I think we could replace the careers callout with the mission statement in the same format. We could also probably cut to a more column based layout with the first two sections at a larger resolution. The images get super narrow as it currently stands. The magnification icons on the map sit on a higher level than the primary navigation so they are still clickable even when the navigation is on top of the map.
  • *Maybe its just the font we are using but Hocokata ti looks odd at almost every reference. The C and the T look like they don't belong with the rest of the word. *Maybe it's fine since they have their own site, but it would be nice to see a pic of the exhibit too
  • Love this page! One of my favorites.
  • I wonder if one of the pictures should be of the inside?
  • the c and t in Hocokata Ti is larger than the rest of the letters. Same with the navigation menu at the top, the c and t seem to be in a different font.

  • - Dakota language heading is not super legible. - In the paragraph text, I think it should be jump-started (vs. jumpstarted)
  • the portions of the site that have one column of text that stretches across the section feel a little overwhelming; it'd be nice to break into multiple sections or squares or add images or icons to help visually navigate and direct the eyes
  • -I wonder if we should reconsider using the collective "we" on this page - especially in reviewing the other pages where it is largely absent, this text feels a little more jarring.
  • The initial text is centered and then the other text is aligned to the right. Was that intentional or should it all be centered?
  • Again, I don't think the same image of Hocokata Ti should be used as a hero image. I think we need to talk as a team regarding photography choices. There is a line appearing above the text "Speak Dakota Every" in the English translation section. Another line is appearing around the "Growing the Language in Our Community" and "Deepening the Understanding of Our People through Language" (I took screenshots if you need a reference).
  • Blurry photos. Careers callout not necessary.
  • There are some padding issues when the content is still in the horizontal view around the tablet size.
  • *Link to hocokatati.org needs to be clickable.
  • I love how you have the larger pictures with the copy to the side; looks great! I think the top section could have a little more of a design element, it's a lot of white space, or possibly less copy.
  • Not sure, but I thought at one point there was discussion about being able to click on some words or phrases, and be able to hear those words in Dakota, along with the English translation.
  • Same as the Hocokata Ti page, we just gotta make sure the special Dakota letters appear the same as the rest.

  • - The first callout box, that starts with “The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community…” is a different font than other callout boxes on the site. - For the “What else to expect” box, I recommend having the title on one line like the previous callout box (instead of split to two lines). - For the “listen to the drums” audio, recommend having a stop or pause button appear once it starts playing.
  • -Add a question mark after "What is the SMSC Wacipi?" -I would like to see a little more of the hero image. -Lowercase the word "wacipi" when it is not preceded by "SMSC" -It would be great to add an audio file so people know how to say wacipi. -No need to italicize wacipi throughout the page. -This might be wishful thinking, but it would be really cool to have a video of the dancing as our hero image/background.
  • I think the hero image can be discussed again. With the smoke effect, I really only see staffs and some of a flag when my screen is fully expanded. I'm sure this may appear differently on a mobile device. I think a better image can be shown that would have a larger impact regardless of what device is being used. The two lines of copy that is directly below the section "What is the SMSC Wacipi" needs to have a different layout. "The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community traditionally hosts two Wacipis each year with one held every summer and another hosted during the winter months. The SMSC Wacipi is a three-day event hosted every August at the SMSC Wacipi Grounds while the SMSC Winter Wacipi is a two-day event hosted at Hoċokata Ṫi". It's currently left justified and tightly against the side of the screen. Please connect with Allison on this. It would be really awesome to have a sound element that could be clicked on near the drum photo. A big impact that is made at Wacipi isn't just viewing the beautiful regalia, it's hearing the music. I would love an audio clip of the drums and signing to be added. Another cool option would be to start adding testimonials of being visiting the event. Whether this is a video, audio, or pull quotes.
  • Looks great!
  • The image sizes to copy ratio make it look like there is something missing when the page is first loaded. Also, the duplicated page title and first section could probably be reworked. It would maybe make sense to convert the first section into just a text block without the image and with the section title removed. The second and third sections have the same title with different content. Does one of these need to be updated?
  • Two blocks are listed as "What Happens at the SMSC Wacipi" let me know if we need to update it.
  • It's a little hard to say with the pictures missing. But I don't love how it says "What happens at the SMSC Wacipi" twice
  • Both the second and third subheads are titled 'What Happens at the SMSC Wacipi' Should the link to the Wacipi website be more prominent?

  • Looking good! FYI - I submitted comments on behalf of the full Goff Public team.
  • such an improvement over the current site! thank you for all your work on the new site.
  • Nice work so far!
  • Overall…great progress! Let’s keep it up!
  • I think it looks great! I love the coloring and styles of the pages. My main suggestion is to remove the careers callout from these pages. And then there are some spots where design/functionality could use a rework, but otherwise not too many issues. Everything seemed to load and work great for me, as it should. Just a few blurry photos - I am looking at this on my large desktop screen.
  • Overall, the site looks fantastic and the interactive elements really make this an enjoyable experience for the user. My biggest takeaway is we should work on a better "hero" section for the sub-pages to make them pop a bit more than they already do. With all the other highly appealing visuals, this section seems to be dull and lacking. There is a bug that I noticed with the main navigation where the hamburger button does not trigger the mobile navigation to show. I can't seem to find the root cause and it happens randomly on different pages.
  • The only other edit I have is that the page title seems boring compared to some of the other text on pages.
  • This has come a long way and is a major improvement from the current site; very well done!
  • Love the work so far - so impressed!
  • Great work on this site!
  • Website looks great so far and feels good to use! Only some small pieces of polish needed in a few different spots. Looking forward to seeing the remaining pages.
